What is Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition?
With over 65% of Canada's business owners set to retire within 8 years - every little solution adds up to unlocking our country's entrepreneurial spirit.
I've been thinking a lot lately about impact. And one impact I want to have is increasing the 5-year success rate of Canada's small businesses from 67% to 72%.
But right now in Canada, when a business owner wants to sell their company there aren't many options - especially as many would-be entrepreneurs are cash crunched & worried about how America's chaos administration is going to affect Canadian biz.
So I think it's time for Canada to reinforce ourselves as a country of entrepreneurs. It's time for every government, business group, BIA, and resident to believe in the power of Canada's small and mighty personality.
Let's make owning a small business a DESIRABLE JOB that gives Canadians a chance to make a positive impact in their communities, in their workers lives, and their own.
But currently one of the biggest buyers of locally owned businesses is private equity. PE has been buying vets, doctors & long-term care homes across USA & Canada.
Meaning:
↗️ Prices skyrocket
↙️ Quality drops
↗️ Money leaves our communities
Profits SHOULD stay local and reinvested in our communities - in Canada. But first we need to improve access to capital for would-be entrepreneurs.
That means:
🏪 Better access to capital & commercial mortgages
🏫 Greater access to business management training for Canadians with an entrepreneurial spark
🤝 Investments in businesses that are actively sustaining Living Wage & Decent Work jobs
Currently when a business owner wants to sell their company there aren't many options - even for profitable businesses - hence private equity hoovering up healthcare practices.
Venture for Canada has been advocating for Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition capital & training to would-be entrepreneurs.
Smart people want to take over businesses but often lack access to capital. Smart governments will want to create the conditions that let them in - and let long-time business owners retire - while keeping ownership local.
While there are serious concerns about Canada's business succession crisis - let's turn it into an opportunity to lead the world in small business innovation - and bring that 5-year small business success rate from 67% - 72%.
